Opportunity grows across the Prairie provinces for Movement51’s financial education programming

Movement51 announces significant investment from PrairiesCan to scale the Financial Feminism Investing Lab: Investor Edition, reaching more participants across the Prairies.

Calgary, Alberta, December 12, 2022 — Following a joint public announcement last Friday, Movement51 (M51), The51’s not-for-profit organization, is excited to share the news that M51 has received $486,350 in funding from Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan) for its financial acumen-building program focused on expanding investing knowledge and capacity for women and gender-diverse people. The funding will support programming for 560 people from the Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) to participate in the Financial Feminism Investing Lab’s Investor Edition (FFIL: IE or The Lab).

PrairiesCan is committed to championing innovation and economic diversification across the Canadian Prairies. Its investment in M51 will support capacity building and growth of the FFIL: IE program, including course development, expansion and the exploration of new opportunities to bring more women and gender-diverse participants to the program.

The FFIL: IE Early-Stage Investing course provides financial education that encourages participants to expand their economic participation by learning how to activate their capital to invest in early-stage ventures.

“While The Lab has seen great success to date, it is still in its infancy. The drive to expand with strong national partners like PrariesCan is significant for our movement and ambition,” shares Danielle Gifford, the Executive Director of M51. “We’ve heard over and over again from women and gender-diverse individuals that they don’t know the first thing about early-stage investing and aren’t sure how to access the right resources or build their investing capacity. Our partnership with PrariesCan allows us to create the blueprint for how women and gender-diverse people grow their confidence and capacity as investors across the Prairies.”

Created in partnership with the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary and initially piloted in early 2021, The Lab has successfully run four cohorts for participants from across Canada. Previous participants of The Lab have experienced a 30 per cent increase in investing confidence, all supported by the learning experience, peer community, and democratized environment fuelled by the program.

The waitlist for upcoming offerings of FFIL: IE is currently open for 2023 cohorts. FFIL: IE provides programming that focuses on each phase of early-stage investing through a feminist lens, while building a community and network of FFIL participants, guest speakers and alum.
